Seven-Card Stud - Basic advice
Seven-Card Stud is a complex poker form and a good strategy is required if you want to be a successful player. There are five betting rounds and you have to keep track of your own as well as the other players' cards at every stage of the game. Since no community cards are used in Seven-Card Stud (in total every player is dealt three face-down and four face-up cards) assessing the strength of your opponents can be rather difficult. With this in mind beginning players should adapt a very conservative approach to Seven-Card Stud. Only enter games where you can handle the opposition and only play really strong hands. These two things are absolutely vital if you want to be a winner in the long run.
Other things to think about when playing Seven-Card Stud:
- Watch your opponents carefully - what kind of players are they? Loose or tight, passive or aggressive? What hands do they usually play? Are they bluffable or easy to scare of with aggressive play? This knowledge will help you determine what your opponents' actions during any given hand mean. Use the information you gather to make correct decisions and thus maximize your winnings.
- As mentioned, you have to be disciplined and wait for good opportunities. When you do get a strong hand you should play it aggressively. Betting or raising is generally a better alternative than just calling in these situations. This will give you the initiative and protect you hand.
- Always make sure that your hand isn't second best. If it is, and you play it all the way, you will obviously pay dearly. When you're holding a drawing hand you should only play it if the pot odds are correct, otherwise you should fold.
- Even if a player has folded, you have to remember what up-cards he had. This is very useful information that can help you determine the strength of your own and the remaining opponents' hands. If you're not paying attention to the other players' cards you will have a hard time winning.
